Location History
The 17Hundred90 Inn is a historic hotel in downtown Savannah that is supposed to be one of the most haunted hotels in the US. Room 204 specifically is known to be haunted by a ghost named Anne. It is said that Anne likes to move around guests’ belongings or tug on their sheets, and is sometimes heard crying in a corner.
Our Experience
Having become a bit braver after dabbling with ghost hunting, Matt and I (Chris) decided to go all in and book a haunted room. We rented the notorious room 204 for 2 nights at the 1790 Inn. When we arrived, the hotel itself had a creepy stuffy feeling. The hallways were narrow, the restaurants were filled with antique decor, and the bar looked like something straight out of a horror movie. We couldn’t wait to investigate!
We had come prepared with equipment- a new EMF detector and our trusted digital recorders with headphones. As we made our way to our room, we came across a window just outside our door. In the window stood a life-size doll looking out to entertain the walking ghost tour patrons that came by. LOL. We opened the door and saw a fireplace across the room that had a teddy bear on the mantle. Being fans of the show Ghost Hunters, we knew that bear was left there by them. The room also came equipped with a Ouija board! But the most interesting thing was the creepy rag doll on the bed.
We moved the doll to the mantle and settled in with our headphones and digital recorders to just sit still and get a feel for the room. There was a mini fridge in the corner that clicked on and scared the crud out of us, but other than that we didn’t hear any strange noises. Matt grabbed the EMF detector and scanned the room. We found a spot in the middle of the room that repeatedly made it go off. Matt would raise the EMF detector, lower it, and move it side to side and it would stop, but when he brought it back to that spot, it would go off.
While we discounted it at the time, in subsequent use of the EMF device, we’ve learned that it doesn’t go off all that frequently. So maybe that was something paranormal?
When we returned downstairs, I ran into the owner and asked her if she’s ever experienced anything unusual. She told me two stories.
When she first bought the hotel, her son stayed in room 204. The doll actually came with that room. Her son said that it was sitting on the mantle but when he came back into the room later, it was several feet away in the middle of the floor. He said there was no way it could have fallen and gotten that far.
One of the maids had gone into the room to clean it. She laid the doll on the mantle and had gone into the bathroom to clean. When she turned around, the doll was actually creeping along the mantle like it was being pulled.
For our two nights, we didn’t capture anything out of the ordinary. I even took a bath in the creepy old clawfoot tub hoping that Anne would be tempted to try to scare me, but she stayed quiet.
A skeptic’s perspective
Part of why we ghost hunt is to get the first hand experience and debunk the easily explained things. So there are a couple of things you should know about this room
1. The room is on the top floor and juts out so that you have windows both behind the bed and across from the foot of the bed. With old thin walls and numerous windows, noises that people hear could easily be coming from outside.
2. Just outside the windows are power lines. Could EMFs be from that?
3. If a room and doll are so notoriously haunted, and objects frequently move…why isn’t this room blocked off to guests and instead geared up with video cameras and 24 hours surveillance to capture this phenomena?
Did we capture paranormal evidence?
Maybe. We had an unexplained weird hot spot in the middle of the room that was setting off the EMF detector.
