Location History
After the great Seattle fire of 1889, the city was rebuilt but at a higher elevation. The city built retaining walls on either side of the old streets, filled in the space between the walls, and paved over the fill to effectively raise the streets, making them one story higher than the old sidewalks that still ran underneath. The area below still had tunnels and old street front buildings that fell into disuse over time and became known as the Seattle Underground. The dark murky area had a number of murders and violent events which is said to have given it a haunted reputation.
Our Experience
We attended a guided ghost tour of the Seattle Underground. The guides provided us with digital recorders and headphones so that we could listen live for any EVPs or strange noises. I had never thought about using headphones on the spot, but it was neat to be able to hear even the faintest whisper from the person next to you.
There were about 20 people in the group, so it wasn’t ideal for ghost hunting but we had a great time. The guide provided the history of the fire and explained how the city was rebuilt. It was creepy to see old store fronts in complete disrepair.
I had one interesting experience. There was an old bank down there with a vault. The moment I stepped into the vault, I heard through the headphones a “Hey” as if someone was calling me out for being where I shouldn’t. In full disclosure, there were buildings and roads above so it could have been a voice from up there. Having the headphones on, I couldn’t tell the direction from which it came. But, it was a kinda neat experience.
Did we capture paranormal evidence?
Nothing conclusive. I heard a “hey” but it may have been from a human, not a ghost.
